Reduced Lunches ~ $0.40 / $2.00 / $ 8.00

Elementary School Lunch Procedure

  • Cafeteria staff will let the students know, as they come through the lunch line, if their account is getting low or if they are starting to charge.
  • If an account has a negative balance, no extras or doubles may be purchased.
  • Any cafeteria charges over $10.00 will result in Elementary student's lunch consisting of a cheese sandwich and a white milk.
  • The elementary homeroom teacher will be given a slip to send home with the student, letting the parent/guardian know that their child owes $10.00 or more.
  • If money is NOT received the next day before lunch, the student will receive the cheese sandwich and white milk.
  • The account will continue to be charged for this alternate lunch.
  • All money should be taken to the cafeteria in the morning before 10:00 AM.
  • No Elementary students may participate in field trips unless their account is paid in full.
  • All accounts must be paid in full by the end of each school year. No exceptions!
  • Any account not paid in full, will not be allowed to charge anything (including lunch) for the following school year.
  • Any money left over in the child's account at the end of the school year will be available to the student at the beginning of next year.

First and Second grade students will be putting in their ID#'s in the cafeteria at lunch time. Please go over these numbers with your child.

Elementary and High School students may substitute an 8 oz. yogurt in place of the main entree. A sandwich will be available on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday only. Individual salads are offered on Tuesday and Thursday for all students. These choices are in place of the main entree.

There are no a la carte items in the cafeteria except milk. However, a student who purchases a meal may also buy extra menu items. Extra menu items are any single item on the menu. Students are charged for any extras that they choose and must have money in their account to cover these. Students receiving free and reduced meals may also purchase extras if there is money available in their account.

Any student who receives free lunches and purchases MILK ONLY, is charged $0.50. The milk is NOT FREE when purchased without a meal.

If a parent/guardian does not want their child to purchase extras, they may request this in writing to the Food Service Director, who will then put a block on the account.

High school students can purchase items from the vending machines but they must be purchased with cash. Soda pop is not available for purchase during school hours. All vending machine selections are analyzed and are in compliance with the nutritional guidelines specified in the Wellness Policy.

The Smethport Area School District utilizes a computerized debit system for cafeteria purchases. With this system, each person is issued a Personal Identification Number (PIN). Even though the student may be able to receive a free, reduced or full pay meal, the PIN number allows them to purchase a meal without being identified.

The Point of Sale systems allows the parents/guardians to deposit money in the student's account in order to purchase meals or extras. Parents can send in money with their child or they can choose to use the online and telephone based MealPay System. MealPay is a prepayment system that allows the parent to make deposits into their child's account via the web at http://www.mypaymentsplus.com or call toll free at 1-866-734-4691. There is a small transaction fee for making a deposit online. The program fee associated with deposits made through MealpayPlus will be 4.75% of the total transaction. This change is due to steadily increasing credit card processing and development costs. Many other MealpayPlus services remain free, such as receiving low balance email reminders, checking purchase history, and viewing balances. MealPay can also be used to check your child's account balance or view their purchase history. You may also set up an email alert to be informed when your child's account balance is getting low. There is no charge for these services.

Please note that if you make a payment through MealpayPlus, it takes a couple of days to be credited into your child's account. The money may not be immediately available. If you have any questions or concerns on your child(ren)s lunch account(s), please contact Toni Morris, Food Service Director, at 887-5543.

Families are encouraged to apply for free and reduced priced meals. Information and applications are sent home at the beginning of each school year regarding qualifications. If your financial situation should change at any time during the year, contact Ms. Kreiner in the Superintendent's Office at 814-887-5543. The information is held in strict confidence.

Families can also apply for free and reduced meals online by going to the COMPASS website at http://www.compass.state.pa.us. COMPASS allows Pennsylvania residents to apply for social service programs, such as Food Stamps (FS), Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), Energy Assistance, and Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) online.
